The crossing from Koh Samui to Koh Phangan is short: Seatran Discovery lists 30 to 35 minutes for Bangrak to Thong Sala on 12 October 2026. Most services run pier to pier between Samui’s Bangrak, Maenam (Pralarn) and Nathon piers and Phangan’s Thong Sala pier, with a separate route from the Big Buddha area to Haad Rin. The table above holds the departures and fares; this page explains the piers, the journey from the airport, and what to allow for with a group. For the rest of the trip, see the Koh Phangan trip planner.
Which piers serve Phangan
Several Samui piers connect to Phangan, and two Phangan piers receive the boats.
Samui piers
Wikivoyage describes Bang Rak as the northeastern tip of Samui and home of the Big Buddha. It calls Nathon “Samui’s port and administrative centre”. For Phangan it says ferries leave Nathon and Mae Nam piers for Thong Sala several times a day, that Lomprayah sails from Pralarn Pier, and that there are at least 3 ferries a day from the Big Buddha pier directly to Haad Rin (Wikivoyage, Ko Pha-ngan). The table above gives the current times for each.
The table also lists a Raja Ferry route from Lipa Noi pier on Samui to Thong Sala. The operator publishes no departure times or fare for it, so ask the operator if you want to use it. Wikivoyage places Lipa Noi pier 9 km south of Nathon.
Phangan piers
Thong Sala is the island’s main ferry port, according to Wikivoyage. Haad Rin is the village known for the Full Moon Party, and Wikivoyage mentions a ferry pier on its west side.
Your choice of pier depends on where your villa is. Wikivoyage lists songthaew prices from Thong Sala to Chalok Lam, Haad Rin, Haad Yao and Haad Salad (see the group section below). It describes the road from Thong Sala towards Haad Rin as steep in places, including the “Hill of Tears”. Ask your villa host which pier is more practical for the road to the villa.
Crossing times
The sources give different figures, and they describe different routes.
The Seatran Discovery booking system lists four Bangrak to Thong Sala sailings for 12 October 2026, each taking 30 to 35 minutes, at 350 THB. The return direction also lists four sailings of 30 to 35 minutes at 350 THB.
The four Seatran departure times from Bangrak (08:00, 09:30, 12:30 and 14:30) are the same as four of Lomprayah’s Bangrak departures in the table. The sources do not say whether these are separate boats, so do not count them as extra seats until the operator confirms.
The Lomprayah homepage gives general journey times for its network: high-speed ferry about 45 to 90 minutes, vehicle ferry 90 to 120 minutes, with the note “Schedules may vary. Please check before travel.” This is not a figure for the Samui to Phangan route alone, so use the table above for Lomprayah’s times between specific piers.
Seatran’s times are for a single sample date and were read on 4 October 2026. The booking system does not say what type of vessel runs each sailing. Timetables change, so treat the sample as an indication and check your own travel date with the operator before you book.
Allow more than the crossing itself. Check-in, boarding and the road to the pier all add time, and the sources do not publish a recommended check-in window, so ask the operator.
From Samui airport to the pier
Samui International Airport (USM) is the island’s only airport, according to Wikivoyage’s Ko Samui guide. The Ko Pha-ngan page says transport to the ferry dock is easy to find at the airport, and that ferries depart several times a day with the last one around dusk (Ko Pha-ngan). A late arrival may therefore not connect to a boat the same day. Wikivoyage gives no exact time, but the table above does: the latest Samui departures in it are the Lomprayah boat from Bangrak to Thong Sala at 17:30 and the Haad Rin Queen speedboat to Haad Rin at 18:30, as read on 4 October 2026. Seatran’s last Bangrak sailing listed for 12 October 2026 leaves at 14:30.
The Ko Samui guide describes the options at the airport:
- A minibus service at a fixed price per person, booked at the counter in the arrival hall. The 20-minute ride to Chaweng costs around 200 baht per person, and may take longer if it shuttles to several hotels (updated February 2023).
- A faster taxi directly to your destination, which may cost 500 baht. Wikivoyage advises agreeing the rate before getting in, because many drivers refuse to use meters.
- Grab and NaviGo, which are also available with fixed prices.
None of these figures is for the airport to Bangrak, Maenam or Nathon, and the sources give no distance or driving time to those piers. Treat them only as a guide to how fares are set, and ask for a quote to your chosen pier.
Wikivoyage’s Ko Pha-ngan page also warns about people at the airport who try to sell a bus and boat combination for an exorbitant price. It advises walking to the exit, where there is an information counter and taxi stands.
Booking ahead
Full Moon dates
Wikivoyage advises booking ferry transport “to and from the island ahead of time” if you travel near a Full Moon Party, because the limited ferries fill quickly. It adds that boats the day after the party are usually packed with other travellers, and that you should not board an overloaded boat (Ko Pha-ngan).
The table above notes that extra Full Moon Party boats from Haad Rin Queen are not listed in it, so check the operator’s schedule for your dates. For a group, book all tickets together and early. The sources do not state whether any operator guarantees seats for a party of 6 to 16 on the same boat.
Bad weather
In the climate charts on Wikivoyage (month by month in our Koh Phangan weather guide), October and November have the highest monthly rainfall on both islands. Samui shows 295 mm in October and 445 mm in November, and the text says Samui is wet from October to December. Phangan shows 306 mm in October and 423 mm in November (Ko Samui, Ko Pha-ngan). For Thong Nai Pan, Wikivoyage mentions a November monsoon that normally ends around the middle of December.
The Lomprayah homepage lists a cancellation and change policy in its footer; read it before you book. The sources used here say nothing specific about cancellations, refunds or rebooking in rough seas. If you travel between October and December, ask the operator about changing tickets, and leave a buffer between a ferry crossing and a flight.
What a group with luggage should allow for
The sources do not publish baggage allowances or per-passenger limits for any of the ferry operators. Ask the operator before you buy tickets for a large group, especially with bulky items such as prams or sports equipment.
A few points follow from what the sources do say:
- Ground transport on Phangan. All taxi service on Phangan is by songthaew, and Grab is not available there (Wikivoyage). Wikivoyage says songthaew drivers ask 200 to 300 baht per person and advises not accepting the price at the pier. It recommends walking about 300 m to the taxi station at the roundabout in Thong Sala, where it quotes around 100 baht per person to Chalok Lam, 150 to Haad Rin and 150 to Haad Yao or Haad Salad. These are guide prices from a third party, not fixed fares.
- Vehicles for a group of 6 to 16. The sources give no songthaew capacities. Arrange the pier pick-up with your villa host in advance rather than negotiating at the quay.
- Time of day. Songthaews on Samui run fixed routes at fixed prices per person until 18:00, and after that act as ordinary taxis with prices to negotiate (Wikivoyage, Ko Samui). Daylight arrivals on both islands make the onward leg simpler.
- Vehicles on board. Wikivoyage notes that Raja Ferry carries cars. The table above includes car ferries on the Donsak to Thong Sala route, which runs from the mainland, not from Samui (see how to get to Koh Phangan).
How we checked
The editors read the Seatran Discovery booking system, the Lomprayah homepage and two Wikivoyage articles on 4 October 2026, and the table above carries operator data read on the same date. Wikivoyage figures are third-party and some are dated, so confirm prices and times with the operator before you travel.
