How to get to Koh Phangan: most routes end on a boat to Thong Sala, the island’s main ferry port. The most direct option from Bangkok is a flight to Koh Samui followed by a short crossing. Cheaper or slower alternatives run through Surat Thani (Donsak pier), Chumphon, or an overnight train or boat.

The ferry table above covers pier-to-pier departures, operators, vessels and prices as read on 4 October 2026. This page explains how to reach those piers and how to choose between the routes.

Fly to Koh Samui, then take the ferry

Samui Airport (USM) was built by Bangkok Airways, which flies there from both Bangkok airports (Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi). Wikivoyage gives 3,000 to 5,000 baht for Bangkok to Samui flights, as read on 4 October 2026. Check the airline for your date.

Which pier you use decides which boat you can catch. According to Wikipedia, the airport is near Big Buddha Pier, where ferries depart for Koh Phangan. The Haad Rin Queen connection from Big Buddha lands at Haad Rin, not at Thong Sala. For Thong Sala, look at the Lomprayah lines from Maenam Pralarn, Bangrak and Nathon and the Seatran Discovery line from Bangrak in the table above. The sources do not publish airport-to-pier transfer times for these piers.

In the table above, Lomprayah’s catamarans and speedboats from Samui reach Thong Sala in about 20 to 30 minutes, and its slower ferry from Maenam Pralarn takes 30 minutes (60 minutes on the 18:30 return). Lomprayah notes that schedules may vary, so allow a buffer between landing and departure. For Raja Ferry’s Lipa Noi route the operator publishes a crossing time but no departures or fare, as noted in the table above. Ask the operator before planning around it.

One warning from Wikivoyage: at Samui airport, people sell bus and boat combinations at inflated prices. Walk on to the information counter and taxi stands instead.

Fly to Surat Thani, then Donsak and the ferry

Surat Thani Airport is served by four low-cost carriers with flights from both Bangkok airports. Wikivoyage gives 1,000 to 1,500 baht for advance flights and 2,000 to 2,500 baht when booked on the day (as read on 4 October 2026). It adds that the onward bus and boat will take several hours.

Phantip Travel has an airport desk. According to Wikivoyage, its combined ticket from the airport to Koh Phangan costs 500 baht for a 4.3-hour journey, and the airport to Donsak pier (Raja or Seatran) costs 250 baht and takes 2 hours. These figures are undated on the source page, so confirm them with Phantip Travel. Lomprayah’s news page of 3 September 2026 also describes combined tickets for the airport bus plus a catamaran or speedboat.

Wikivoyage also notes that the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) office on Talad Mai Road is the only government tourism office in mainland Surat Thani. It advises buying ferry tickets only from the operator or from Phantip Travel, not from private offices near the airport or bus terminals.

Donsak crossings to Thong Sala

The three main operators from the Surat Thani mainland, according to Wikivoyage, are Lomprayah, Seatran Discovery and Raja Ferry; all three are in the table above. Seatran’s booking system shows five departures between 05:30 and 17:30 for the sample date of 12 October 2026, each taking 2 hours 30 minutes. It does not state the vessel type.

Wikivoyage describes the Lomprayah catamaran as the best option for comfort and speed. In the table above it is also the dearest from Donsak: 550 baht against 290 baht for Seatran Discovery and Raja Ferry, as read on 4 October 2026, for a crossing of 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes instead of 2 hours 30 minutes. Raja Ferry is the vehicle ferry in the table. If you plan to take a vehicle across, that table carries its published vehicle prices.

Overnight train via Surat Thani

Seat61 describes the train route in detail. Long-distance trains leave from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central station (KTW), which opened on 19 January 2023. Train 85 leaves KTW at 19:50 and reaches Surat Thani at 06:23. Surat Thani station is at Phun Phin, 14 km from the town centre. Shuttle buses meet the train and run to Donsak ferry terminal, about 60 km east.

Seat61 recommends the 09:30 minivan from the station and the 11:00 Lomprayah catamaran from Donsak, arriving at Koh Phangan at 12:45. That matches the Lomprayah Donsak departure in the table above. Seat61 gives the sleeper train fare to Surat Thani as 1,332 baht in an air-conditioned 1st class sleeper and 804 baht in an air-conditioned 2nd class sleeper, as read on 4 October 2026. Tickets are booked on 12go.asia or baolau.com.

Trains can run an hour or two late, and Seat61 says its schedules allow for that. Wikivoyage warns that a combined train, bus and boat ticket can leave you paying extra for the next boat if the train is late. Buy separate legs only if you keep a margin.

Chumphon: flight, train or bus, then catamaran

Wikivoyage lists Chumphon Airport (CJM), 30 km north of Chumphon city, with direct flights from both Bangkok airports taking around 60 minutes. Nok Air operates two daily flights from Don Mueang and offers a combined flight and ferry ticket. Lomprayah’s news page of 2 October 2026 also describes combined bus or van plus catamaran tickets from Chumphon Airport to Koh Phangan.

By train, Chumphon is the option if you plan to stop at Koh Tao, according to Wikivoyage. Express train 85 arrives around 04:00, leaving about three hours to wait. If you are heading straight to Koh Phangan, Wikivoyage suggests Surat Thani instead, and says you reach the island at about the same time either way. Seat61 notes that Chumphon station is in the town centre and that a Lomprayah minivan covers the 26 km to the pier.

Chumphon Thung Makham Noi Pier sailings to Thong Sala are in the table above. One departure is a ferry with a change onto a catamaran at Koh Tao, so read the notes in the table.

Bus from Bangkok

Wikivoyage says the government bus to the Na Dan ferry piers is the most direct bus option. Its tickets are sold at the Sai Tai Taling Chan terminal in Bangkok. Lomprayah also sells a 06:00 bus and ferry combination from an office near Khao San Road, at 1,300 baht one way according to Wikivoyage (undated). The same source mentions a night bus. Wikivoyage also advises keeping valuables out of luggage holds on some budget agency buses.

Night boat from Surat Thani

Wikivoyage lists a night boat at 400 baht that leaves Bandon Pier at 23:00 and arrives at Koh Phangan at 06:00, a journey of 7 hours. The fare buys a space on a mattress on the boat. The return leaves Koh Phangan at 22:00 and reaches Bandon Pier between about 04:00 and 06:00, depending on which Wikivoyage page you read.

According to Wikivoyage, night boats are individually owned and routes can be cancelled without prior notice. Buy tickets directly from the operator at the pier and confirm times on the day of departure. If your group wants a berth together, ask at the pier, because the sources do not publish group allocations.

Tips for groups and families with luggage

  • Book early and together. Lomprayah’s search form asks for adults (12 and over) and children (under 12). The sources do not state how many seats one booking can hold. Check availability for your whole group before paying.
  • Avoid the Full Moon Party window if you can. Wikivoyage says ferries fill quickly around the party, and boats the day after are usually packed.
  • Luggage allowances are not published in the sources we used. Ask the operator before you travel with large bags.
  • Plan the Thong Sala transfer in advance. Taxis on Koh Phangan are songthaews (shared pick-up taxis), and Grab is not available. Wikivoyage (as read on 4 October 2026) gives about 100 baht per person to Chaloklum, 150 baht per person to Haad Rin or Haad Yao and about 250 baht to Thong Nai Pan, so the fare depends on where you stay. It describes songthaew fares in general as per person, not per trip, so for a larger group they add up quickly. The sources do not publish group or charter rates, so ask your accommodation about a pick-up.
  • Walk to the roundabout. Wikivoyage says drivers at the pier try to fix prices at 200 baht and recommends walking about 300 m to the taxi station at the Thong Sala roundabout.
  • Think twice about scooters on arrival. Wikivoyage lists scooters at 250 baht per day and describes roads with steep hills and sand. That may not suit travelling with children and large cases.

How we checked

We read the Lomprayah timetable, the Seatran Discovery booking system and the ferry data behind the table on 4 October 2026, and compared them with Wikivoyage, Wikipedia and Seat61. Figures from Wikivoyage are undated on the source page unless stated, so confirm them with the operator before you pay.

Questions and answers

What is the most direct way to get to Koh Phangan from Bangkok?

Flying to Koh Samui and taking a ferry or catamaran to Thong Sala pier is the most direct combination described in our sources. Bangkok Airways flies to Samui from both Bangkok airports, and in the ferry table above the Lomprayah crossings from Samui to Thong Sala take 20 to 30 minutes.

Is there a cheaper way than flying to Samui?

Wikivoyage, as read on 4 October 2026, gives 1,000 to 1,500 baht for advance flights from Bangkok to Surat Thani on low-cost carriers, against 3,000 to 5,000 baht to Samui. You then need a bus and a ferry from Donsak, which takes several hours.

Can I travel to Koh Phangan overnight?

Yes. Seat61 describes an overnight sleeper train from Bangkok to Surat Thani with a minivan and Lomprayah catamaran connection, and Wikivoyage lists a night boat from Surat Thani that arrives at Koh Phangan at 06:00. Check night boat times at Bandon Pier, because routes can be cancelled without notice.

How do I get from Thong Sala pier to my accommodation?

Taxis on Koh Phangan are songthaews (shared pick-up taxis). Wikivoyage, as read on 4 October 2026, gives about 150 baht per person to Haad Rin or Haad Yao, and advises walking about 300 m to the roundabout in Thong Sala instead of accepting the first price at the pier.

Should I book ferries in advance for the Full Moon Party?

Wikivoyage advises booking ahead around the Full Moon Party, because the limited number of ferries fills quickly. Boats off the island the day after the party are usually packed.
